When I picked my car up from the mechanic yesterday, I noticed that the radio had been tuned to a station that I don’t listen to. I didn’t make much of it, but obviously someone had been listen to the radio while working on the car. Then this morning I listened to something with a lot of bass and discovered that bass on the driver speaker is completely blown. Mind you, I’m so paranoid about blowing speakers in this car that I always keep the sound down. Sigh. Now I’m going to shell out $50 plus shipping to order a new OEM speaker.

Don’t touch people’s fucking stereos.

Damn mechanics, I hope that was the only speaker/thing they broke. Any chance you can get them to pay for it?

Yesterday my uncle told me his mechanic forgot how to be customer friendly as well. My uncle told the mechanic to always keep the car on the charger overnight, and to make sure not to leave the key in the car, to prevent it from being locked in. Guess what the mechanic called him for the second day it was in? Yep, the key was locked in. So my uncle asked him if he did at least put it on the charger, nope he forgot that too.

Some people...

I went to a technical high school-in the automotive class. I remember getting taught-and tested-to NOT screw with a radio-even seat adjustors if it can be avoided.

I would go back + bitch to the service manager.

That’s shitty.

We’ve got a standing “start car/radio power off/pull in shop for repairs” policy. Doesn’t get turned back on until I’m doing post repair inspection.

I’m sure if I made a big deal out of it, I could probably get them to pay for it, but I’m not inclined to make it an issue. Jag specialists don’t grow on trees and the shop owner has been really good about accommodating me on short notice.

I think what I’ll probably do is just replace it myself and eat the cost. Next time I bring the car in, I’ll tell him that I’m certain that one of his techs blew a speaker on the car, and that I don’t want to make an issue out of it, but I also don’t want it to happen again.

I actually even make a point to always leave the radio on the second preset, just to see if it ends up on a different station.

The weird thing too is that I brought it in for a transmission issue, so it should have been on the lift the whole time except for the test drive, and who the fuck blasts the radio while doing a pre or post test drive?

Yeah, I’m not going to make an issue about being paid to replace it, but I’m definitely going to bitch about it.

Don’t wait until your next visit. Just give him a quick call and tell him what you suspect happened, and ask that he talk to his mechanics/techs to prevent this in the future. Let him know up front that you’re not looking for any compensation and he’ll be receptive.

Agree - he has a much better opportunity to manage it with his techs if he finds out now. And handle it from a customer relationship perspective in the way he wants to.

Are the speakers that fragile? You seem to have a concern about damaging them, is it a typical jag issue? That sucks that they would crank the stereo while they had it, no reason for that, that’s just disrespectful in general. Maybe it comes with the territory for a specialist, but I would think any pro that’s worth their salt, would be more respectful. I’d definitely give the shop owner some feedback. Maybe it was some low level porter or something like that? At the least you should let them know it happened and give them an opportunity to fix the situation on their end. No need to rip his head off, but just let them know there is an issue.

It’s a good thing my EQ is buried deep in the radio settings where no one will ever find it. I’d probably take a nutter if someone messed around with it.

I wouldn’t say that they’re fragile, just uncommon. The blown speaker is, thankfully, just a common 6.5" (although with a weird impedance), but the doors also have separate tweeters that are a completely unique size, so I’ve always been weary of pushing them too much. The general consensus amongst owners seems to be that if you need to replace it and you can find OEs (it’s a car that went out of production 14 years ago), you need to find the closest size possible and get a bit liberal with a glue gun.

But yeah, I’m definitely going to address it in a civil way, because I don’t want to have to worry about this sort of thing happening whenever I bring my car in.

Gotcha, and yeah, maybe the shop owner doesn’t realize there is an issue.

That’s become one of my pet peeves, lack of respect. I’m not even going to get into it, but suffice it to say we could all do better. Sounds like you’ve got a good attitude about the whole situation.

The only thing I do when I get in a car is slide the seat back so I can fit. I never screw with height, mirrors, climate or anything else and I tell people that when they get their car back. The only thing I will do to someones stereo is turn it off or turn the volume down if I can’t figure out how to turn it off, usually because I’m supposed to listen for ‘that weird sound’ or something...

It’s absolutely worth mentioning to the shop manager. This is the kind of thing that will cost them customers. Was it a dealership or an independent shop?

They never should have touched the radio, besides maybe turning it off. As an aside, though, can you really turn the OE radio up high enough to blow the OE speakers? I know this is a Jag, but that seems like a pretty terrible design. I’ve known plenty that distort like crazy and maybe it’s just an issue of fatigue over time, but I’ve never heard of being able to blow a speaker from a stock radio system.

Evidently, since it’s definitely blown. Fatigue definitely played a part, they are 16 year old speakers. From looking around on Jag forums, it definitely seems like it’s not uncommon for people to blow the speakers. I’m inclined to imagine that they’re stock, because upgrading anything in old XJ8s is such a pain that only the most determined psychos actually try it and even then they usually stop at splicing in an AUX cable.

In our body shop we go through all the presets and record them if we need to disconnect power at anytime.

Yep. Glad to hear it. Most people are shitty to one another. No reason to let it get you riled up. But when the karma comes around don’t forget to laugh about it. The instant karma subreddit is very satisfying if you haven’t check it out.

Sorry man. Step 1 getting in a customer car: turn the radio off. If I’ll be disconnecting the battery, i cycle through the presets and note them for re-entry afterward. That’s how it should be.
